Annapurna Circuit – On two wheels through the silent majesty of the Himalayas.
When Luca Schätti arrives in Nepal with three friends – Finn Treudler, Maxime L’Homme, and Dario Lillo – he knows one thing above all: He wants to consciously end the hectic year in nature. For the European champion in XCC and fourth in this year's World Championship in Switzerland, it was a conscious step away from the competitive everyday life: "After a long racing season, I like to do a few biking or gravel tours. I love to discover new things with my bike and travel to new countries." This time, the choice fell on Nepal and the legendary Annapurna Circuit – a loop around the Annapurna massif, high over the Thorong La Pass and deep down through centuries-old valleys.

One route – full of extremes.
The traditional Annapurna Circuit is an incredible blend of culture, elevation gain, and scenic diversity. Away from classic bike paths, the route winds over partly rideable tracks, partly difficult terrain: from the subtropical beginning in the Marsyangdi Valley, through blooming rhododendron forests, up into alpine dry landscapes and over the snow-covered Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m – the highest non-motorized pass in the world, which Luca crossed effortlessly and of which he is particularly proud.
Luca and his crew completed about 300 km and approximately 13,000 meters of elevation in 7 days and 25 hours of pure biking time – an impressive feat even for fit racing cyclists. The tour not only leads through spectacular nature but also through traditional villages such as Manang or Ghyaru and past hidden lakes, monasteries, and breathtaking views.

Challenges and low points
The journey was no walk in the park. Already during packing, the athletes faced the question of how they would handle the extreme climatic differences: "Down at 800 m it was around 30 degrees, and above 5,000 m it could drop below freezing at night. We had to be prepared for everything!" Luca recounts. Despite perfect preparation, there were tough moments: On the way to Ice Lake, they had to carry their bikes over frozen snow, and the anticipated descent turned into a tricky hike after thawing.
And yet – it is precisely these challenges that make it so appealing: "I have never experienced such silence on the snowy pass in my entire life. That was really fascinating."
Encounters that leave a mark.
A particularly striking encounter for Luca was in the small mountain village of Ghyaru at around 3,700 meters. As he rolled into the village, a young boy named Gurkha ran up to him – curious, open, without any hesitation. With wide eyes, he examined the bike, reached for the shift, dropper, and lockout levers, and laughed at every hum, every click, every movement. Luca let him be, eventually placing him on the bike – and in that moment, joy exploded. The boy beamed with delight, hardly wanting to get off, forgetting everything around him for a moment. This ease, this pure enthusiasm rubbed off on Luca. Amidst the altitude, exertion, and silence, he realized how little it takes to experience real joy – a moment that gave him more than many summit meters before. And on the last evening, there was a surprise: the Nepalese Cross Country champion appeared to meet them, saying it was an honor to meet them – and even cleaned all the bikes spotless as a sign of his hospitality.

Nature as an energy source
And that's exactly what adventures like this are all about: recharging by surrendering to nature and finding oneself. For Luca, it was not just the riding itself, but the experience in the valley, surrounded by eight-thousanders, that provided energy: "Riding in a valley and seeing two eight-thousanders to the left and right was unique."
Inspiration with respect
The Annapurna Circuit is not a race. It is an expedition that requires physical preparation, respect for the altitude, and a realistic assessment of one's capabilities. More than just a bike ride, you are racing against wind, weather, and limits – and in doing so, learning how rich life can be beyond the comfort zone.
Conclusion: For those who want to not just collect kilometers on the bike, but experience stories, the Annapurna Circuit is a unique trip – an experience that inspires, challenges, and changes perspective. And for Luca, it's clear: One day he wants to experience all seven continents by bike and thereby complete a life project that goes far beyond athletic ambitions.
